You Cannot Consent to Being Trafficked

Article 3(b) of the Protocol against Trafficking in Persons states "consent of a victim of trafficking in persons to the intended exploitation set forth in subparagraph (a) of this article shall be irrelevant where any of the means set forth in subparagraph (a) have been used".

(see UNODC, 2014)

What is forced labor?

Human trafficking in labor practices occurs when people are not free

to leave or move at their own will.

Many corporate practices overseas constitute trafficking, this includes:

  • Confiscation of passports, visas and identification documents. This means people are not free to leave.
  • Debt bondage.
  • Telling people they will be imprisoned or deported if they contact authorities.
  • Control of people’s money, e.g., holding their money for “safe-keeping”.
  • Limiting contact with the public and making sure that any contact is monitored or superficial in nature.
  • Use or threat of violence toward victims and/or families of victims.
